Following Montessori principles, the preschool room is a mixed age room which supports children aged 2 to 5 years. This room is called the Perky Pineapple room.
Preschool children are taught the Montessori curriculum, explained further below, and are prepared for primary school. Sunshine Fruits leavers have gone on to a range of primary schools, including local schools such as Lyndhurst and Brunswick Park, and selective schools including Alleyn's and James Allen's Girls' School (JAGS).
Practical Life activities develop children's fine motor skills and promote their independence. Pouring water, doing up buttons, twisting lids, unscrewing bolts and more all help develop children's dexterity and extend their concentration.
Sensorial activities explore the properties of objects, from large and small, wide and narrow, loud and quiet, soft and hard. Children get to work with large and exciting materials and by playing with objects with defined properties, they are learning pre-numeracy skills beautifully through play.
Children are offered a range of creative resources to explore and activities are usually based on the monthly Topic. Our children have proudly built buses, made aquariums, painted animal masks and threaded jewellery.
The primary schools our children move on to consistently comment on the solid grasp of phonetic sounds and the outstanding reading ability displayed by our school leavers. Our children have often achieved end of reception level literacy goals by the time they leave us for primary school through a combination of Montessori reading materials and the complimentary Jolly Phonics approach.
Montessori was a keen mathematician and her resources make maths accessible, hands-on and vitally, fun! Children are taught maths by learning through play, playing with objects and learning with their friends. We start with large, interesting activities and move onto (equally intriguing) small quantity beads which allow children to add up all the way into the thousands. Children are taught from the earliest age to be excited by maths.
Curiosity, engaging conversation and open minds are encouraged and matured through our activities. We help children engage with the world around them and understand what makes the world such a special place. We take our globe for walks around the sun on birthdays, we build models of interesting processes like life cycles and allow children to experiment with concepts like sinking and floating, melting and freezing.
